This shiso is a culinary herb that has broad red leaves. It has a flavor much like cumin but with a cinnamon aroma.
This is our classic shiso plant selected for your garden. This plant can grow to be tall and bushy so be sure to prune it away from your lights. Also, when harvesting the flowers besure to do it before they fully open.
Perilla frutescens, or Shiso, is native to the mountainous region of China and India. This bright leafy red herb is a cousin to mint. The leaves are such a deep red that it is often referred to as “beefsteak plant” because the color matches that of freshly cut steak. Much like a fresh steak this plant is incredibly aromatic. This makes it perfect for sushi wrapping, pasta topping, and essential for your next set of pickled vegetables. Along with the leaves you can also eat the flowers of this herb. Red shiso is more flavorful and aromatic than the more common green variety. Additionally, green shiso is available year round while the beautiful red is only available in June and July, that is until you got your Rise Garden! Adding red shiso to your kitchen is perfect for your salads or other Asian dishes and is also a great way to add anti-inflammatory to your body!

"My daughters are young and I thought a smart garden would give us a fun learning tool. We received our garden today and I assembled it in an hour or less. Everything is running and ready!"
- Kathryn, Fort Worth, TX"We just started. Putting together the unit was not difficult. The instructions were perfect. Now we are growing. We had some questions and customer service was extremely helpful."
- T.D Merges, Michigan"I live in an area where the air quality is too toxic to safely grow food outdoors, so I knew an indoor garden would be the best way to go. I love the way my Rise garden looks in my modern loft."
